Actually, the health benefits (if there are in fact any significant ones) of nursing a toddler do not outweigh the detriments. For one, nursing, along with the bottle and pacifiers, contribute to ear infections in toddlers. Also, once a child has teeth and is able to eat table food, there is no nutritional reason to nurse. Bonding can be accomplished by cuddling and spending quality time with your child. And yes, nursing at that age is taboo in our society, and should be considered. At what age does nursing your child stop being your idea of "healthy" and start being society's idea of "child molestation". Come on, if your kid is old enough to dress herself, feed herself, and so on, she certainly doesn't need to be suckling from your teat. Besides, if she is coming to nurse for comfort when she is having trouble sleeping, this is clearly an issue.
