AUTHOR: Kim B-P |  |  | I homeschool my 2 daughters ages 9 & 12. The 12 year old always had a problem with learning how to read. But through homeschooling, I also take the approach that kids will learn when they are ready and not forced (ALOT of 'problems' develop because of that). So we let nature take it's course. Time went on and still nothing was happening and I could see that things just weren't right in that department. Tried lots of other programs but nothing worked because they didn't address the basic needs which is what she was having problems with. She couldn't decode this secret language so to speak. Now my youngest daughter thoughout all of this learned to read ALL on her own. Meanwhile, through our local school district, reading-challenged daughter was tested and was found to be needing 'resource' education. They wanted to put her into fulltime school to address her problem. My husband nixed that because he has a mother who taught in resource and said that would make bigger problems and that she needed something that would actually hinder her.
So we stumbled upon LM-Bell. Thank goodness!!!!!!!!! Yes, they are astoundingly expensive, yes they don't promise results (we're thinking, "We're paying this much and no promise?".......) but we had to try something for her; her self-esteem was crumbling and she couldn't learn without reading (she'd had enough of my reading to her all the time!).
So at the age of 10 and a half, with basically no reading skills, she attended LM-Bell from May 2001 to Sept. 2001 for 4 hours, 5 days a week (days off here and there for holidays and vacations). The progress was unbelieveable. She came out of there reading above grade level and couldn't put a book down! She also came out spelling better than most of her friends can, knowing the differences between their and there, for example.
I would recommend this program highly to anyone. She's a perfect example for LM-Bell. They were able to teach her the necessities that she needed to learn how to read; to be able to get around her learning problems in order to accomplish this goal.
Each child varies and your son probably wouldn't need as much instruction as he seems to be actually doing well for his age! My words are relax; he'll do fine. And he just may not be a good reader at all. But he does well in Math! Good luck! brumley5@ifn.net
