My daughter had the same problem around 13 months. What worked was ignoring it as long as she was not in danger of hurting herself. When she was done, I would as her if she was ready to play like a big girl, and 9 times out of 10, she was fine for the rest of the day. She hasn't had a tantrum for 2 months now, and she is 19 months old. The last one she had was because I would not let her have ice cream for dinner. She started screaming, I let her out of her high chair and told her when she was ready to act like a big girl and eat with the family, she could come back. Within 10 minutes, she was at the table eating her dinner with me and my husband. It was frustrating in the beginning, but it worked better than spankings or threats. Young kids want to have control yet do not have the words to say "I'm mad, mommy!"
