Would like my bed back!

My 17-month old child will not go to sleep by himself. I either have to be holding him or in bed with him. Even when he seems to be sound asleep, I still have to be right there so he can feel me or he will wake up. This is partly my fault because he slept with me from the time he was born. The first six months it was beyond my control because of the situation at the time. Now he has his own room and bed. He feels playing in there is fine but sleeping in there is out of the question. What can I do? I have tried putting a gate in his doorway but he just climbs over it as soon as I leave. Tried letting him lay on the floor on some blankets so even though he is technically sleeping with me, he is not in MY bed. Tonight I even tried closing the door (I really hated to do it but I didn't know what else to try)but my neighbor/best friend was over and she just could not stand the crying and knocking he was doing so he let him out and held him until he went to sleep. I just don't know what I can do. I'm being to believe he is going to sleep with me in my bed forever! PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP!!!!! I am willing to take any suggestion but I doubt there is anything out there I haven't tried.
