We had that problem too. We went to a conference with our son's teachers to discuss how we could solve this problem. His teachers agreed that it was really ridiculous and they told us that they stayed about an hour everyday after school and if our son wanted he was welcome to stay in one of their classes and work on some of his homework. That way it would be at least one less book for him to carry. It works out pretty good.
