You did the right thing! My ex was into the same thing as well. He eventually got more into it and got abusive in many different ways! He was told he had an addiction as well by a counselor.
You need to know it had nothing to do with you. Since your kids are older I would sit down with them and talk about the situation and why what he was doing was wrong. That way they know it is wrong and it is not normal.
