feeding schedule for solids and formula

When do you give your baby solids? Before or after formula? I have been giving my son his solids 1 hour after his bottle. This has been working well. However, a book I am reading said to give the solids and formula together. Has anyone tried this? I think my son would be too full from his bottle to eat the solids. Plus, my husband and I still have some difficulties with our son taking his bottle--I have recently stopped breastfeeding. My son is 6 1/2 months old and drinks 1 6oz bottle every 4 hours.
