My Strong Willed 1 Year Old

My son is just over a year old. For the most part, he's a very happy & loving child, but his will is amazing! He won't listen! We've tried pretty much everything, from talking firmly to smacking his hand or leg. Most of the times, he'll just laugh at us. No form of discipline seems to phase him & I certainly don't want to smack him too hard that I hurt him. He's just so unbelivably determined. I've even tried reverse psychology, hoping he'll lose interest in the things he's doing wrong, but no luck. He's a very smart little guy. He started walking at about 8 months & his doctor says he's advanced in his motor skills. Any advice??? Thanks!
