First, I applaud you for nursing for 5 1/2 months. It's ashame, but that is an accomplishment in this country. You do, however, have a great number of facts incorrect and I don't think you were helping that woman with your scornful reply. She obviously has a great relationship with her daughter and they both have benefited from it. Nursing long-term does not make a child needy...as a matter of fact, the bonding makes a child more self-secure. My daughter is the most outgoing child in her class. Also, nursing for a year increases IQ by 7 points (which is a significant number I am told). Lastly, long-term nursing decreases the chance of many gynecological diseases as well as health problems in the child as he/she grows (such as colitis).

Lastly, after nursing for one year, your body no longer produces milk without demand. You won't leak...you actually produce milk as the child sucks. This woman won't have to worry about leaking on her "new man." I do, however, think she is ready to wean (from the sound of her letter) and then it is "the time."

I wish you and your child/children health and happiness and hope you have a more open mind to those of us who believe in long-term nursing (and aren't hurting anyone in the process).

- Susanne
