Oh, how I feel your pain! My now 16th month old did that the first year of her life. Almost daily. The doctor described them as "night terrors". They're way different than nightmares. They happen in stage 4 sleep about 1-1 1/2 hours after they fall asleep. My baby's would last an hour sometimes. The even happened occasionally when she was awake. It was the scariest thing ever. Nothing would comfort her and she acted like she wasn't even conscience. I even video taped her so that I could show the doctor how horrible it was. When we moved to a new house they never happened again. My 70 year old grandmother said she saw a ghost in my baby's room a few times and I was starting to wonder if that was the problem.

Good luck!
