Go visit the public school, you are allowed to just show up. Ask for a tour they will gladly give you one. Feel free to ask to sit in on a class room that is the level your child would be in. I have never know a good public school deny this of a possibly new student's parent. I did just that of all the schools in my district before placing my son any where. It came down to he being accepted into one magnet school in the district or private school. I didn't do private he got into the magnet school but I wouldn't change it even to this day.
