My daughter was also originally labeled developmentally delayed, but they noticed she was spelling and reading very well for her age and retested her. That's when they came up with Asperger's. In your son's preschool, they should know about Social Stories. They play a big role in the developmental preschools here in my county. It is where you write a story about a particular situation that you child is having trouble with. You write out the situation, and then write a solution in to the story. If your child can read you can use words, or if your child cannot read yet, you can use words and correlating pictures. Just for instance, my daughter is terrified of storms. So we wrote a social story about it. It went something like, "Sometimes is nice and sunny outside. But sometimes it storms. Sometimes the thunder is too loud and hurts my ears, and makes me scared. When the thunder is loud, I can hold my ears and this will help. I don't have to be afraid because I am safe when I am inside. Pretty soon, the storm is all gone and it is sunny again."
Also, you might want to hook up with your local Autism Society in your area. If you don't know how to get in touch with them, contact the Autism Society of America, and tell you who it is. They have a web site. Your local autism society will know about social stories. Also check with your teachers. They probably know about it. I would check into occupational therapy for your son. The school he is in should provide that. My daughter was in it for 2 1/2 years at developmental preschool and it did wonders. She doesn't have trouble walking or peddling now.
