My sister used a different approach with her 4 year old when they were having this problem.
She asked her daughter what made her feel safe when she was scared. Her daughter, Alex, said her Daddy and their big dog (CG) made her feel safe. My sister then put a picture of Daddy and CG on a spray bottle full of water. She called it "monster spray". Her daughter then used that spray bottle each night before going to bed to spray in all the areas of her room she was afraid a monster may be lerking. It seemed to work for her.
