You know, I am in the same boat with you. I have a daughter who will be 4 on October 5th this year and am struggling with the idea of sending her to Kindergarten next fall (2003) when she won't be quite 5. My daughter could name letters and numbers at 18 months, was potty trained early, she makes friends easily and is very independant. However, despite all her apparent "readiness", I still lean toward putting her in when she's 5, about to turn 6.
We have a family friend who is a speech therapist and strongly encourages parents to wait instead of testing their children into kindergarten. If your child excels, he or she can always skip a grade later! I think as long as you have your child in a pre-k program that is challenging enough for him/her, that it isn't neccessary to test them in early. I have gone back and forth on this issue myself, but always come back to the feeling that it would be best to wait and have my daughter go when she's old enough to handle the responsibilites of school life, bussing, bigger kids, pressure, etc...Good luck!
