 | I am a first grade teacher. These fun activities will help your son retain those tricky sight words. However, don't lose sight that he is younger than the rest of his class. Therefore, he really isn't behind. Kids learn sight words easily if they are able to write them. However, you've got to make it fun. Use bathtub paints and write them during bathtime. Give him a paint brush and a bucket of water. He can paint his words on the sidewalk, house, etc. Let him write them in the sandbox.
Make a memory game by using 3X5 index cards. Start with 3-5 words and write one on each card (so that you have two words the same on two different cards) Turn them upside down and look for matches. Of course, have him read the words as he does all of this. If he writes it and can't read it, praise his effort and simply tell him the word then...MOVE ON! He will learn through repetition. The learning that takes place through writing the words will transfer into his reading the words. As he learns a new word and feels confident, add a new one until he knows them all. For a wonderful feeling for your youngster, "retire" words that he knows to a special wall in his bedroom. Simply write them on an index card a place it on his "WALL OF FAME!" When he gets hung up or frustrated on a word he doesn't know. Simply point out all of the words he does know! (This idea came from a wonderful teacher book that I own.)
You can pick up magnetic letters at a dollar store and he can build his words on the refridgerator while you are cooking dinner. The key is to remove all of the pressure and have fun. I hope this works.
