you're exactly right that you can't force him into anything he doesn't want for himself. the sad news of it is, that kids either will drink, smoke, and whatever else, or they simply will not. we live in a small town, and at our highschool about 95% of students either drink or smoke, or both, and there are the kids who do harder drugs also. there's no way around the fact that the opportunities are there, and it's hard to pass them up. give your son time, dont nag him about it, and he'll probably grow out of the phase.
