| Mothers like yourself give me hope for the future. It sounds to me like you and your son have the relationship that we all wish for with our teenagers. He sounds great and I have no doubt that it is because he has a Mom that cares enough to go get him for the reassuring that she needed and therefore he needed too (even if he didn't know it) and then the continuing wisdom to take him back after they had had "their" time and let him keep on getting on with his day at school. Perfect. I have to admit that I resisted the temptation to go and retrieve my 9 year old son. I was aware within myself that my impulse and instinctive need to be with him was just that, MY NEED. And although that is at times enough of a reason since my needs do count too, in this situation I felt the routine was good for him. I did phone the school however and having received the satisfactory answers that I hoped for (they were calm, cool and very aware of the over stimulation too much "news" would have), I straightened up my spine and went on with my day. When he came home and periodically every day since the trajedy, I sit down and spend time with James and have a one on one where I monitor his behavior, body language, expressions, more closely than a lab scientist, and if I am satisfied that he's still okay and though upset as we all are, still firm in his foundation of home and hearth, then we hug and go back to what we were busy with before. So far so good. I'm hoping to have a 15 year old like you do. How'm I doin? |
