| Perhaps your kids would do it behind your back but some of us have the kind of relationship with our child that is filled with trust and honor. My son trusts me and my judgement and if I tell or ask him not to do something, I have no reason to doubt that he respects my wishes. He has time and again proven himself to be worthy of all of the trust that I securely place in him. He is intelligent and therefore curious. But, thank God, I have been able to instill wisdom and understanding in him also and he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. If Mom says this is not something I should be doing, she must know more than I do about it and I won't "test" her knowledge. That is his basic philosophy. Now, I don't mean that it is altogether blind faith, although there is that factor also which as a parent, if used well and respected, is appropriate. But, if he has questions in regards to the "forbidden" I answer them frankly, openly and straight on. Thus, his firm foundation of trust in me is cemented. I think that you may mean well, but honestly, your letter just sounded harsh, uncaring and relatively uneducated and inexperienced. As a teachers "aide" you really are not qualified to respond for your school anyway. I'm sure that THEY wished that you hadn't. My folks were both educators and believe me, you spoke out of turn. I hope that you learn from this (as we all have and will) to think and to act with wisdom and not self-righteous indignation. |
