SUBJECT: Playing The Drums and Handedness
Anyone familiar with the proper way to hold drumsticks knows that the right-hand stick is grasped wrist down and the left-hand stick rests between the thumb and first finger with the stick sliding between the middle finger and ring finger, wrist facing upward. While in high school, I played a variety of woodwind instruments and my boyfriend was a drummer. A very good one I might add. He currently has published two drumming instructional books.

But anyway, he taught me how to play drums and was amazed at how quickly I got over the awkwardness of how the left-hand stick is held since it was believed I was right-handed though now I know I guess I am sorta ambi. And I could play very well for someone that never had before. He is a strong righty but overcame at an early age the awkwardness of holding the left-hand drumstick.

I am now curious as to other, famous professional drummers and what their handedness is. Buddy Rich is the only one that comes to mind and unfortunately, a lot of rock-band drummers hold the sticks the same way with both hands ... that being by grasping with wrist facing down.

Does anyone play the drums or perhaps know if drummers tend to be ambi or even more left-hand oriented? Thanks!
