SUBJECT: ADHD Treatments
My 8-1/2 year old daughter was recently tested/evaluated at a local hospital by a neuropsychologist for a learning disability at my own cost and recommendation. The school system retained her in first grade as she just didn't "get it". They said she needed a growth year. After the year, 4/30/02, we met and she "didn't grow." They recognized she needed help but thought she had a low iq (and didn't therefore qualify for IDEA law help) because she didn't excel in any academic subject. However, they agreed to give her additional help for the last month of school because she was already in speech and language therapy. At last, the diagnosis is in. ADHD. They say her iq is in the low-average range 87. I'm going to set up an appointment with her doctor (HMO) to see a specialist to talk about meds. I don't know why, but I have the feeling that there is more there...I suppose I'll know if when she is on meds and "nothing clicks" still. Does anybody have any advise/recommendations? I have been worried sick prior to the diagnosis seeing her working as a grocery bagger or stocking shelves. Any thoughts are appreciated. Her Dad took her to the appointment because I had a migraine, now I wish I had gone. It seems all through their "report" they make references to his input regarding ADHD. Any idea about allergy meds and hyperactivity? She has been treated for allergies for the past several years. Also she is entering "puberty" (I was also early). What impact can hormones make on all of this? Thanks for your ideas! (PS. I just posted this on school issues).
