Dear upset mom,

I understand your fear. If your children were made to look at the television then that to me was insensitive. I am a mother of 13-year old twins and a high school teacher. A student was the first person to approach me and make me aware of what was going on around 9a.m. The students in high school often know before the teachers. With limited information however it seemed to be an isolated incident of terrorist bombing the Trade Center in NY and I immediately changed my opening activity to include this current event. My students were going to various news sites and reading about the events. What I soon realized however was that as each class came in, the story was progressing into something much greater and causing both them and myself great concern. You see, I teach in the Washington Metropolitan area where many of my students' parents work for federal agencies including the Pentagon. My sister and mother both for the Department of Defense so you can see how things escalated for me as well. By 4th period, my 9th graders came in with a totally dazed look and I was beginning to feel like it was from more of what's going on and what's going to happen to me...the fear of the unknown was greater than the fear of what was actually going on. Many of them wanted to leave before early dismissal, before buses came, etc. They were given the option finally to speak with a counselor--the principal came over the PA system--but many of them were more comfortable speaking with me. They were advised to write a paragraph about what was going on and if they didn't want to read or look at the pictures, to just describe how they felt giving me an opportunity to recognize who needed me most on perhaps a one-on-one. When the students shared their feelings, they seemed to become more comfortable with what was going on. Realize that many rumors also are passed on in the hallways that aren't necessarily true and I wanted to relieve and fears I could.

It was a tough call but I think I did the best thing when I look back on how the students entered the room and how they looked when they left.

My 13-year old twins however weren't told anything at their school--an hour away--and were upset to see parents at their school coming in to pick up their children after being in traffic downtown for hours and see the destruction first hand, very upset. Some were so upset that it disturbed their children to see their reactions because they feared the worst.

It was a tough call but if you have recommendations as a parent on how it could have been handled better, or even how it can be handled when they return to school--were didn't have school today--I'd love to get your feedback.

A partner for parents in the schools
