why do boys act the way they do?

I had an ex-friend(male)who i really cared about, we talked for a year and i really did think that i would be with him forever. He was my first and the closest male friend i have ever had. after i talked to him about going together, he told me he didn't want a girlfriend. so, i began to stop liking him because i beleived he just used me to sleep with. but now we don't even speak but we see each other every day, and he's talking to my ex-best friend (we're not friends because of him).but i would like to call him and say hi but evey time i call he looks at the caller ID and doesn't answer. i don't think he wants to be bothered, so should i try harder to be friends or i'm i wasting my time.
