I am a mother of a recovering drug addict. My daughter used methamphetamine, also known as speed. She is a very bright girl who got caught up with the wrong crowd at the age of 18. She is now 20 and has been clean for 14 months. I have learned many lessons from this ordeal. First of all, it is very important for YOU to get support. Let your family members and close friends know what you are going through. Go to AL ANON meetings in your area. You need to have psychological strength to be able to help your daughter. All I can write to you is about what I did. Pot, although different from speed, is still a drug, is very psychologically addictive, and CAN lead to other drug abuse. Our daughter was 18 and considered an adult, so we were unable to force her to a rehab. What we learned from MANY drug counselors (internet, such as Narconon, police officers, and private counselors), is that they need to hit their bottom before they want to get help. This may sound harsh, but we kicked her out of the house with NO MONEY..they only spend it on drugs and will lie to you about what they did do with the money. When you give them money you are only enabling them in their drug use. She came home after three weeks on the street with the knowledge that when she came home she had to check herself into a rehab. She did and she's doing great! She is working on her Eighth step and has completed an EMT program. My little bit of advice is, if you can, check her into a rehab yourself. You should be able to do that because of her being a minor. Undoubtedly you are a loving mother...Don't give up!!! If my daughter had been 16 at the time of her drug use I would have put her into a rehab asap. A reminder, she has to want help for it to work, but her knowing you care enough to send her there just may be the ticket back to a life of being drug free. Our ordeal was a very long year. We enabled her in the beginning because we didn't know any better. We were very scared and kept quiet at first-not telling anyone about it, but that made us crazy. Support from other family members helped. Don't wait..do it now before the problem with pot becomes a problem with other drugs as well. May God or your higher power be with you.
