 | Firstly, I want to thank those that responded to my plea for help. As a single Mom sometimes I feel like I'm all alone doing a Mom against the world thing. I deeply appreciate the help. I made the decision yesterday to have my daughter tested outside of the school. The school's stance is that if she is not labled "learning disabled" through testing (say it's a low i.q. instead) that she would then be in-eligible for help under special ed. Because she has however been in speech therapy under special ed, they agreed to "help". My ex-husband, bi-polar, said he had a very difficult time in school and wanted to quit. Back then they didn't have a label like "learning disabled" but he did require extra help as did his son from a previous marriage (who also wanted to quit school). I enjoyed school but also had a difficult time in math, although for my adult life have worked in financial institutions working with numbers! I can't see how you can "fix" the problem if you don't know the diagnosis. Instead of discouraging testing, I think the school should have suggested I get her tested outside of the school for a diagnosis and returned to them with the results (which I intend to do). They are "checking" her for what level of reading and math she is working at so they know where to begin her help. I usually like to work "within" the system, but in this case I think parents know best. The meeting I had with the team at the school seemed more like the blame game than anything else. I kept repeating I think she is doing the best she can do. She will end up working stocking shelves at Walmart, etc. if nothing is done! (No offense to those working at Walmart I do shop there). Thanks for your prayers and input. |
