Ok Sarah, me again.
My son is almost 7 and has both DSI and ADHD. We are just facing medication and have an appt. with a doctor to dose him next month. I'm not sure which medication he'll be on but for his sake I want to try something to help him. He sounds a lot like your boy, wants to pay attention, is sweet and sensitive, and yes...I've even gotten the horrified reactions to the medication question. My reply to that is..."Well, if he were diabetic would you expect me to withold insulin because I didn't want to medicate him?". It's a very individual thing though. If YOU feel comfortable you're doing what's right for him then you probably are!
As for your husband, I can say that you're both probably right. You do need to set clear consice limits for your son, especially an ADHD child. They need rules and limits or they feel out of control. I would say that letting him get away with things is not helping him...but that's how it works in my experience. I would never tell anyone how to parent, nor how to discipline, kwim?
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need to talk. I do know what you're going through.
