SUBJECT: Stepmom to ADHD teen needs help
My stepson was diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarden and is now 13. He was doing well with Ritalin in school until last year. Just before his 7th grade year he moved in with his father and me and changed schools because his mother said she couldn't handle him anymore. During the school year he flunked math and language and got D's in other classes. Neither parent wants to put forth any effort to help him and left it up to me. I spent many hours talking with teachers/counselors, set up appointments for psychiatrist/counseling, but I can't get either parent to follow-through with their suggestions or further therapy. They refused to get him testing for learning disorders. He's now living with his mother again. Both parents seem to let him do whatever he wants and never punish him. I can't stand it! His father just says I'm trying to control his son and is demanding for him to move back in. I've tried to meet with both parents and a counselor, but they always want to cancel the appointment. They feel I'm trying to tell them what to do with their kid. What do I do?
