As a former kindergarten/first grade teacher I noticed a difference in childen who came to school early, especially boys. I also have a daughter who has a summer birthday and elected to keep her at home another year, because cognitively she is bright (reading at a first grade level), but socially, emotionally she needed to mature. The best thing to do is visit the school you are interested in and ask the kindergarten/first grade teachers how they feel about entering school early. If the teacher says, "It is best to stay home another year." Then I would listen to her advice. The kindergarten teachers where my daughter will be attending in the fall unfortunately feel burdened with young children who are not "developmentally ready" to meet their teacher centered, academic curricululm. I have noticed a swing in early childhood education. And kindergarten is becoming more academic and less "developmentally appropriate." It's a difficult decision. All schools should accept children no matter where they are developmentally, but in this real world it is the children who are labeled as "not ready", not the schools. Good Luck.
