It sounds like it could be one of three things....either, your son has A.D.D.(attention deficit disorder), he's a gifted child who needs other stimulation, or he's just plain bored. My son had the same problem around age 9, and we had the school counselor test him in a variety of areas. He just happened to be a gifted student who gets bored very easily.I have to ask him about school projects and homework daily. Yes, I know it gets tedious, buy hey that's what it takes to get him going so be it. Since 4th grade my son has been in a talented and gifted public school. My son is now 12yrs.old, and in the 7th grade, he also took his SAT in Jan.2002. Good luck, I hope my family story helps!
