IN REPLY TO: 8 year old forgets his homework and its hurting his grades

I am so frustrated because I don't want to see him do badly because he "forgot". I scheduled a confrence w/ the principal and the teacher to try to resolve. Any advice would be great.

My son has had similar problems. He also doesnt have any learning disabilities although he has been screened for ADHD.
My son is 10 now and it has improved alot this year. He is in 5th grade now and doing great. I think that two things played into his problem with "remembering" his homework.
1. In most classrooms the end of the day is very hectic and if a child has difficutly staying focused during these chaotic times then they will remain disorganized.
One idea if this could be the problem is having your son pack up for homework after each subject. If he has a basket he could put things in that he will need for his hw then he could empty the basket at the end of the day.
Last year my sons teacher assigned him a "homework buddy".....a child that doesnt have any trouble staying organized that checks your sons backpack for him at the end of the day to make sure that he has everything he needs. This worked remarkably well for my son.
2. I personally also think that sometimes it is a maturity and personality issue. My son was horribly disorganized but all of a sudden this year he seems to be becoming more organized and responsible. He is a young fifth grader with many of the kids in his class being a full year older than him. It seems to be balancing out. He is the youngest by age but at the head of his class academically.

Good luck. Hope this helps.
