I have had a many opportunities to talk with my 9 year-old daughter about puberty and menstruation. Here are some ideas that have worked for me:
Watch "A Baby Story" together. I taped a few episodes and watched the ones I though would be useful with all of my kids when I was pregnant with our last. It brought up all kinds of questions like why there was blood, how the baby came out (the show is tasteful, but you can skip episodes that show more than you want), etc. This was a good opportunity to explain the purpose of blood and that there isn't any need for the mom to "store" it when she isn't pregnant.

Here's another idea I learned from the Cosby show years ago that I used with my daughter when we began talking about menstruation...After explaining the nuts and bolts, tell her how excited you are for her to become a women and it is so special (like she's part of a new club) that you can't wait to celebrate with her. As soon as her time comes, you two will have a whole day together--shopping, going to a movie, a favorite restaurant, etc. to celebrate!
