 | I know I have come in late in the discussion but I think I can give you some good info.I worked in a daycare/preschool for three years, I have also worked with children in special education.I have attended many seminars on bitting and how to handel it and Im almost sure the center your child is in can find out where to attend one.
Yes biting is normal at the childs age but not exceptable.It is your right to ask that your child and the biter have little contact with each other.You can ask that they make sure your child is not seated near or sleeping near the biter.In my opinion the mother of the biter should handel the situation more effectivly or have a better attiude about it,if she is doing nothing about it the child will make a connection that mommie doesnt care if he bites thus the behavior will continue.It may help you to know that certain bites mean different things,for example a bite from wrist to elbow is a bite of frustration,a bite from elbow to face is a bite of aggression.It is also important to know that you should always take attention away from the biter and pay more attention to the victem that way you do not reward the biters negative behavior.You can suggest to your childs teachers that they set aside a day to learn about biting and why it is wrong,they can tell them about all the "yucky"germs that can hurt them.For a craft that day they can make books with pictures of things that are okay to put in there mouths such as food and teething tools,also a book of objects that are not okay to put in there mouths like people,pets,or toys.It is important that the mother of the biter and the care givers both handle the situation in the same way and consistantcy is a must.I dont belive you should have to remove your child from the school,the directer should take action and give a limit to the number of incedents she or he will allow.The last bit o advice I have for you is if the school does not provide an accident report that you request one for each incedent,with a detailed discription of what happened and it should include the childs name and should also be signed by both parents(policy may vary in the giving out of names from center to center).And if a bite is severe enough it should be looked at by a doctor.I wish you luck and I hope everything works out for everyone involved. |
