If I were you I would wait another week and have another ultrasound just to be sure. It they cannot pick up a heartbeat then, I think you can be safe in saying that it has passed away. I had a scan when I was 6wk 6days and there was a hearbeat, but my HCG level wasn't going up enough so I had another scan which showed that the heartbeat had stopped and it had even shrunk a bit.
