My son use to do the same, for years. I say a specialist for this. I was told to wake my son half an hour after a falls asleep. It resets the sleep pattern that. Stage 4 of sleep is when problems like this occur. Night Terror and Nightmares are different. Night Terror is what this sounds like. The good thing is that they don't remember what happened. It can be very scary and hard for the parents. I would just rub my son's back and talk to him for a few minutes. He would open his eyes and fall back to sleep. It works!!!
