My mom was a dr spock reader. When my little brother was born (we're six years apart) he threw fits, and screamed. I can always remember her ignoring him when he did this. When he calmed down a bit, she would pick him up and hold him speaking softly, asking him what was wrong. Sometimes he would answer sometimes he wouldn't. He was about 2. But I think that she had empathy for him because they cannot always say what is on their mind. From that he learned to be paitient, calm, and a very loving little boy.
All toddlers have fits. When they are spanked for this they learn to be more angry and unsatisfied. Then yes, they will be scared and resentful of their parents. And when they grow up, you sure do not want an eighteen year old resentful for his or her parent(s). I'm not suggesting that you allow kids to walk all over you, but when they are behaving well, or have been for awile, be sure to praise them as if they are the best kids in the world Because you know what??? THEY ARE!! GOOD LUCK
