You need to ask yourself why you want a girlfriend. From what you said I can assume peer pressure. Here's the deal:

Don't hang out with people just to get a girlfriend. Basically make friends with as many girls as you possibly can. When you find a particular group you like sit with them during lunch. (that's the hard part.) Once that's over wait a about 3 to 8 weeks (yes it's long) and you can safely ask for a girlfriend with the chances of a "yes" in your favor.
