SUBJECT: How do I get help??
For years my son's teachers have been suggesting that he has ADHD (he is now 12) I have an older brother who was diagnosed with "Hyperactivity Disorder"as a child and I guess I was in denial it didn't add up to me that a straight "A" student could have ADHD. The principal at his old school insisted that I do a Connor's Rating Test after many "behavioral problems" (talking out in class, constantly getting out of his seat, putting things in his mouth like erasers and pen caps) in order for him to remain in the school, which I did.I assumed that since he never gave me the results I was correct and he was mistaken. I challenged him to challenge my son more as he is a very smart boy. I told him that I felt that all of the goofing off and inattentiveness was due to being bored. As this was also the case with my brother. I was then informed that it was not possible due to the small size of the school and if I had a problem with it to put my son in public school where they have programs in place. His teachers were very patient with him because he was often the "smartest kid in class" Well as time has gone on the problems are escallating. I know part of his problem is puberty but every day is a constant challenge and his behavior is getting worse and harder to handle. It is disrupting his school work (now he gets A's,B's &C's for the first time)and especially our family. I have been doing a lot of reading and have come to the conclusion that as much as I hate to admit it I think his teachers have been correct all these years. I would like to have him evaluated but have hit a brick wall. I have contacted my insurance co and all they do is give me a list of Psychologists. I have contacted every one with in a 45 mile radius and have been told they don't do ADHD evals. I am so frustrated!! He is now in a public school due to our move last year but the only person they can suggest has an 8 month waiting list and that's just for a call back they won't even book an appointment until then ( I was told it would be about a year until he was actually see unless he was sucidal or I suspected drug abuse!!!)Maybe I should say I do?? I wonder if anyone has hit this brick wall and knows a way to climb over it?? My son feels that he is not like the other kids and often tells me he has few friends because he is "weird". I cry myself to sleep because I know he is in there somewhere just dying to get out. I have read a lot of views on meds and caffeine. I adjusted his diet to cut back sugars and dyes. That didn't help any. The caffeine didn't help either. I'm at the point where I'd like to have him try a low dose of something but can't even get the door open to find him help. Any advice would be unbelivably appreciated.
