Our son was waking up to 20 times a night. We read every sleep book we could find. With Elizabeth Pantley's "No Cry Sleep Solution", we "weaned" our boy from going to sleep in our arms. It's best to read the book, but the idea is to ease her into going to sleep on her own. You have to start with making sure she is going to sleep on her own at bedtime (otherwise she'll always 'need' you to get back to sleep).

Then, when she wakes, don't pick her up. Try the absolute minimum of interaction to get her to sleep. Let her go to sleep with your hand on her back, then try to move your hand and just "shush" her, then just stand there quietly and only "shush" if she stirs, then just "shush" from the doorway, etc., until she is used to going to sleep on her own.

The Ferber method does work (and very quickly), if you can hack it. The key is not to start something you can't finish; if you know you can't stand her crying, don't try this. Otherwise all you're teaching her is that she has to cry for a really long time, but eventually you will pick her up.

Persist. A full night's sleep is wonderful and so worth the effort. Think of it as short-term pain for long-term gain.
