My 17month old has been doing this as well. He used to sleep w/out a problem since 4months. It started that he would wake for a few minutes we would pat him on the back and tell him to go back to sleep and he would be fine. Then that wasn't good enough. he started waking more and becoming very upset when we left. We had to let him cry because we knew he was fine - not sick or wet etc. It will only last 10-20min. and after a couple nights he is back to normal. He is smart- you give an inch he takes a mile. He just started getting used to us coming in again. Every so often I "fall" for it. He may be fine for a month but then he wakes and if I "fall" for it and think something is the matter (never has been) He begins waking nightly again. Just be strong and have faith in yourself that you know your child. I know my son is fine if he stops crying after 20 min. I also know his cry. But there are those nights that I am weak and I have to start all over again. Good luck
