SUBJECT: 18 mo-old with reflux has stopped eating/drinking
My 18 mo-old granddaughter was diagnosed w/reflux shortly after birth. She is currently on 15 mg. Prevacid qd and 2 t. Miralax qd for chronic constipation. She developed an aversion to drinking shortly after birth so bottles of breastmilk and/or formula were given to her only when she was sleeping. Two bottles of milk totalling 14-18 oz. have been continued during sleep due to her lack of desire to drink anything during waking hours. Recently she became very agitated at meal times, screamed at being put in her chair, threw food, banged her head against back of chair, and pulled her own hair. Her mother stopped attempting meals in her chair and placed food and drinks conveniently around the house for her to enjoy at will. After 10 days of these changes, the child has almost entirely stopped eating and drinking. She displays no hunger or thirst. When she does eat, she seems satisfied by a very small amount, couple cheerios, 1 or 2 small bites of banana. The sleep feeds are becoming more difficult as she is refusing the bottle in her sleep. As a baby she tested normal for barium swallow, swallowing study and gastric emptying. Her tonsils appear normal and she has regularly been to feeding specialists.

Has anyone experienced these problems? We are desperate for help. Her doctor says the eating issues are probably just behavioral and somewhat normal; WE DO NOT AGREE. The longer she goes without eating, the less she wants food.
