 | I have a 4 year old boy that is having alot of problems in school. According to his teacher he will not listen, will not sit still, bugs the other students, won't join circle time, and doesn't want to do the class projects. The way the teachers tells me the news of my childs problems, you would think that he is getting ready to wage a rebellion against the school.
He is very active at home, but he is so smart. He can say his a,b,c's, count to 30 by himself, knows numbers and letters by sight. His mind works so well. He can't drive a car, but he can ask you where you want to go eat, and he'll tell you how to get there. It just really bothers me that I can see that he is very, very smart, and on the other hand can be a holy terror at school. My wife and I have tried everything from spanking to grounding to time-out. Nothing seems to work.
I often feel that the teacher is singling him out. The first month of school we had a parent/teacher conf.. My wife and I were so excitied about going to our sons first conf.. My wife was crying when we came out. The Teacher floored us to tell us that our son needs to be held back, and to take another year of preschool before kindergarden. She said that he did not have the social or development skills to progress to the next grade. This came after only a month of school.
My thinking is that he is 4 years old. He is just a small child. He's not attending harvard. YET? But should a "preschool" theacher be so critical of a small person because he or she doesn't color within the lines?
