going to be 4 and not fully trained!

We are out of ideas. We've been trying to train him to BM for the past year and a half with only success at peeing. That has been very consistent now for the past year with not one accident. He is a very smart little boy so I'm wondering why he wouldn't want to master this? He tells me he is too little or that he is scared and can't do it. He doesn't seem embarrassed around other people but yet not one accident at the sitters. He saves it all for us! Beyond the usual advice for bribery or praise which we found hasn't worked, does anyone have any other suggestions. We feel like we've tried everything,even resorting to putting some ownership on him to help clean himself up but he doesn't seem to change his ways. Please help! We don't want him to be labelled the stinky boy at school!
