Our problem is very similar. She too will fall asleep just fine at bedtime and at naptime, too. It's hard to remember, but I think it started a regular pattern around the time she turned one. It could have been teeth, new motor skills, or weaning from formula. Back then, I would go in once she was crying, pick her up, then a couple of minutes later lay her back down. Now we are downstairs in front of the TV for 1-3 hours in the middle of the night because she WILL NOT go back to sleep for at least that long and it's very boring sitting in a dark room for that long. I have to laugh at those parents who say 5 minutes seems too long. We've tried letting her cry for an hour! We tried to do one nap, and that didn't work at all. She slept a total of 7 hours last night! I have no suggestions other than I think they are just lonely. We're going to try having her sister sleep in her room this weekend. Hope you have better luck.
