When do they need shoes?

Hi! My 8 month old just took her first step by herself yesterday. She fell straight to her butt and hasn't tried since, but I figure she'll be at it again soon. I was wondering when I am supposed to hit Stride Rite. My mother wanted me there when she started cruising last month. She believes they help with balance and all that, but I think the new expert beliefs are that their feet aren't fully formed and need to be free. I can't keep up with all the opinions, but I want to do the right thing. Any opinions?
