We had the same problem. We were going to have our second child and didn't want the first to think the second was kicking him out of his room and bed. The room was also in the basement and ours was upstairs so we were very afraid. What we did is make his room really fun to be in and his bed too. We started a routine of going in, reading a story, and then turning off the lights so it was dark, nothing to look at. Then have him lie down and we knelt by his bed and lied with him at first for a week or so. Cannot remember exactally. Then it went to we would lie next to him for a few days and then just let him do it on his own. Now he goes in his room, he has to look at a book, and then he goes to sleep. What is nice is that his younger brother thinks that is normal and does it automatically. As all children are different hope this works with you.
