SUBJECT: 9-year old Embarrassed from being singled out
I am so frustrated!!! My 9-year old child confided in me that there were some changes in his aftercare environment that he did not like. After speaking with him, I went to the Director to convey our concerns. The very next day, the Director called a meeting with all the students and announced that it has come to her attention that there are students here that are unhappy. She said, like... and named my child's name in front of the group. My child was embarrassed and mortified. It took me a few hours last night to convince him to continue to express himself and that the director should never have done that. I had a conversation with the Director today stating my concern of 1) jeopardizing my confidentialty code with my child and 2) the issue of singling him out in front of the group. She apologized for problem number 1; however, she felt that problem #2 is not an issue. She states she does this all the time and feels that it's a great tactic to encourage group participation. Now is it me... or does anyone else remember when they were young and did not want to be singled out in front of the class!!!! I told her I'm sure that should not be a practice of hers and we continued to disagree. I'm desperating searching for more information on this type of behavior and how it may effect the child's self-esteem or cause them to withdraw and not express themselves...as was what my child was feeling. Does anyone have any advice for me or even the name of a site or publication I may review? Thanks much!
