SUBJECT: before I knew I was pregnant....
I am 20 years old and a student at the University of Texas. I just recently found out I was pregnant. Though I was extremely surprised (I was on the pill) my fiance and I are both happy about the pregnancy and want to keep the baby. However, being that this pregnancy was a total shock and that I am a typical college student, I feel so ashamed about what I did before Iknew. I can think of three instances when I went drinking and had 3-4 drinks and once when I smoked a small amount of marijuana.

Since finding out I was pregnant I have been leading a healthy lifestyle, with no alcohol or other substances and have been eating healthy. Despite the fact that my doctor told me there was nothing to worry about I can't help but worry anyway. I always thought I would have a planned pregnancy and would do everything "right." I know this might sound neurotic but I can't help feeling like babies who were planned will be at a greater advantage to my child. I keep beating myself up about it;I just couldn't live with myself if my actions (unwittingly or not) hurt my baby.

Has anyone been in my situation before? How did you cope with the guilt? How have things turned out so far?... Any advice for a medical professional would be welcomed as well. Thanks for letting me vent.
