In Arizona, all of the funding is distributed through the Department of Economic Security, specifically through a subdepartment called the Department of Developmental Disabilities. By having your child test (often at your expense) by a developmental pediatrician and providing the diagnosis of autism, your child should qualify for benefits. This may seem like a broad brush with which to paint, but the funds are federally appropriated so your state should be getting them.

A 504 plan (aka Individual Education Plan or IEP) can be useful in a private school setting, but it is really intended for public school use. Since the public schools are federally funded the 504 is actually a great tool to use when communicating your exepectations to the school. Here is a link to more info:
