 | I visited many pre-schools before enrolling our 3-year old son in a trendy, state-of-the-art, highly academic school. I did this even though it took 2 hours out of my day--30 minutes there, 30 minutes home, 30 minutes there, 30 minutes home. (I'm a stay-at-home mom.) I thought I could sacrifice anything, including time and money, to get him the best education. I thought the kids at this pre-school would have upstanding parents since they too could afford this expensive school. Wow! I was completely blind and shallow. After the New Year, we're planning on taking him out of that school. In my situation, the teachers would rather gossip with each other than spend quality teaching time with the students who are running around like maniacs and hurting one another--every day.
After speaking to Early Childhood Educators, I am told that 3-year olds mostly need love, positive interaction with other children, and encouragement to learn and grow. In my experience, just because a school is expensive and new doesn't make it better.
I recently revisited a school I toured last year, and I can't believe I scoffed at them. It is an older yet clean facility, with a much cheaper tuition; the teachers have extensive experience, various degrees, and a pure love for students and teaching. The difference is astounding! Again, various degrees don't mean a thing if you can't tolerate energetic 3-year olds, but I hope my instincts are right--this time! |
