Kids this age seem to mirror, so the spanking, or anything like that probably won't work. It may make it worse.

I noticed that my 15 month old started biting, pinching, pulling her brother's hair. But when I paid close attention, I realized that he initiated it. He was gently pushing her, keeping doors closed that she was trying to get through, taking things out of her hands, refusing to share toys, and he was very quiet about it, and tended to do it more when he thought I was not looking. With her limited means of communication, she was responding. He established the nature of their relationship, and soon she just started walking up, and pulling his hair. So I kept them separated for a few weeks. I used child gates. If she tried to do anything to me I said no clearly and firmly, and sometimes put her in a timeout, or took a toy if she was hitting with it. Finally, she stopped doing it so much. Every once in awhile the two of them get into it now, but I immediately seperate them.

Maybe your son's behavior with your daughter is just carrying over into daycare. I don't know about the head banging, but if I recall correctly there's a discussion on that exact topic, if you scroll down.
