4 yo will only have BM while standing up

My son is 4.5 yo. He's trained for pee. He always does a BM in his underwear, never in the toliet. We had a long talk about this. He says that it is too hard to go while sitting on the toliet and he cannot do it. He can do it standing up only.

So I thought, well maybe he just needs to practice sitting on the toliet so he feels comfortable sitting there. He sits on a regular toliet that has a child ring, with a stool under his feet. But he says he doesn't want to. And if I insist he starts out crying, then I give him a book and it's okay. And after a bit he says it won't come out and he's done. This boy is prone to power struggles and has held his BMs before.

I think this problem is just bizarre. Does anyone have a suggestion?
